About Us

The Chromatography Group is an independent scientific interest group founded in 1973 as a special interest group affiliated to the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry. Although still nominally affiliated, it operates independently of the NZIC and has a predominant focus on the promotion of all matters relating to chromatography and the provision of training in chromatographic techniques. It is still run by a small group of enthusiasts, who between them have over a century of hands-on experience across the various chromatographic techniques. It is a genuine "distributed network" organisation as it has no head office location, support staff or premises – not even a letter head!

It is not affiliated with any specific instrument or consumable supplier, though many of these have provided support over the years in various ways, mainly by participating at or promoting our regular GC and HPLC training courses or workshops.

The CG is best known now for its training courses which are probably unique in the world for their emphasis on "hands-on" practical chromatography. These courses have been updated regularly over time (not without a pang of regret for some favourite topics!) to reflect today’s instruments and capabilities.

The need to move with the times has been the driving force for the setting up of this web site. We no longer travel and meet each other as much as we used to. The trade representatives are fewer, their and our time is more precious, so newcomers to the technology have much less chance of learning about the "how to" and "why" of chromatography than was the case 20-30 years ago.

The development of a more "tangible" forum or contact point on the web was a logical choice, though it has taken us some time to get to this point. What we have today is but a starting point. With time and your help we would like to evolve this into a really useful facility for New Zealand (and other) practitioners. Quite what we will finish up with, we are not sure! Your comments and suggestions are awaited eagerly!
